A Day in Dubrovnik: How to Make the Most of It
A Day in Dubrovnik: How to Make the Most of It
Croatia is home to a number of picturesque locations, but the port city of Dubrovnik is easily one of the country’s most beautiful destinations. Lapped by the stunning Adriatic Sea and situated on the delightful Dalmatian Coast, Dubrovnik is the perfect place for a relaxing day. That’s exactly why our Croatia and the Adriatic Tour concludes with a full day of leisure here.
Here are 5 of the best ways to spend some free hours in this terracotta-topped town.
1. Walk the Old City Walls
A stroll along the 2-kilometre path around the city is an absolutely exquisite experience. With the enchanting blue hues of the Adriatic on one side and quaint buildings on the other, there are spectacular views in every direction… not to mention the photo opportunities!
However, you do need to plan your walk wisely. From morning to mid-afternoon, the ramparts are packed with cruise passengers that have disembarked for the day. Immersing yourself in the stunning surrounds can be difficult with other people everywhere, so we recommend saving this wall-top walk for late afternoon (after the cruise ships have sailed away). This also saves you from the midday heat.
Allow about 1 hour for this stroll. There are two entrances: one at the Pile Gate and one at the Ploce Gate. If you’re coming from your Dubrovnik Hotel, the Grand Villa Argentina, the Ploce Gate is closer.
2. Stroll the Stradun
The Stradun is the main street of Dubrovnik’s Old Town – and it’s well worth putting some time aside for! Lined with fantastic shops, restaurants and ice cream parlours, this is an ideal spot for some relaxation, people-watching and souvenir hunting. As it is the main street, it can get quite busy at times. Luckily, the Old Town also has plenty of quieter (but equally charming) alleyways to explore.
At the end of the Stradun, you’ll then find 2 of Dubrovnik’s icons: Luza Square and Orlando’s Column.
3. Marvel at Museums and Churches
Another thing you can look forward to when you visit the Old Town is the chance to see some fantastic museums and churches. For example, you won’t want to miss Dubrovnik’s maritime museum and it can be found inside St. John Fortress. The Franciscan Monastery and Museum is another must-see; here you can witness walls that have bullet holes preserved since the Croatian War of Independence.
The plethora of beautiful churches in Dubrovnik include the Church of St Ignatius of Loyola and the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin.
4. Enjoy Some Local Food
You can’t leave Dubrovnik without sampling some delicious Croatian pastries. They’re available in both sweet and savoury varieties, so why not try (at least) one of each?
As you would expect from a city on the Dalmatian Coast, the seafood restaurants here are exceptional. Once again, the Old Town is where to go for this. Also be sure to stop for a drink at Café Buza, where you can enjoy extraordinary views of the Adriatic.
5. Relax at the Hotel
The previous 12 days of your tour will have left you inspired, but you might also be a little bit tired! The Grand Villa Argentina has a great pool to enjoy and offers breathtaking views of both the town and the sea. Many guests choose to relax in the hotel and reflect on the amazing sights they’ve seen and experiences they’ve had.
