Slovenian Culture

Things to Know Before You Go

Here are some important details that you should know before you go:

  • Language – Slovene is the primary language spoken in Slovenia, and features a number of Slavic dialects that are native to certain regions. Given its Italian and Hungarian neighbours, you might find the odd Slovenian speaking one of these languages as well. But don’t fret if you don’t know any of these languages – English is a language taught in schools, so there’ll be some citizens that speak English.
  • Money – Slovenia uses the euro (€) for its currency, so you will need to use euro coins or cash. Coins come in 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, €1 and €2 denominations, while cash comes in values of €5, €10, €50, €100, €200 and €500. Some places may accept credit card payments.
  • Time zone and daylight – Slovenia is in Central European Time (GMT +1) or Central European Summer Time (GMT +2) during the summer months. This puts Slovenia 10 hours behind Melbourne, nine hours ahead of Los Angeles and one hour in front of London.
  • Electricity – Slovenia uses a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz. You can use a Type F plug while travelling.
