Czech Republic

For a small landlocked country in Central Europe that’s only officially existed for a few decades, the Czech Republic is an exciting destination with an eventful history and a rich cultural tapestry that sits firmly on many vacationers’ itineraries.

The Czech people are proud of their diverse heritage. Over the centuries, the country welcomed travelling Germans, Italians and French, including a large number of deserters from Napoleon’s army. As they worked and lived together, these diverse people melded traditions and worldviews, establishing a Czech culture that is open, accommodating and familiar, no matter where you hail from.

The countryside and small towns are well loved for their charming cobblestone laneways, delightful chateaux and fairy-tale castles. The capital Prague has all these charming elements, but also infuses a modern mindset – it’s a dynamic city with a global reputation for fine dining, modern art and an inspiring music scene.

Albatross Tours runs exciting Czech Republic tours over Christmas that take in the best of the snow- covered countryside, the pleasant villages and the pleasures of Prague.

Touring the Czech Republic by Coach

There’s a good few reasons that Albatross Tours runs several coach trips across the Czech countryside. It’s the very best way to soak in days and nights worth of mediaeval architecture, Christmas markets and snowy mountains.

When you travel by coach tour, not only do you skip the hassle of planning a route yourself, but you go places you’d never dream of going.

While plane trips bypass those dainty little towns that hardly dent the skyline, a coach tour can take you through place names like Třeboň, Karlštejn Castle, or Kutná Hora. Okay, that last one is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage listed city – but you may not have known that without a coach tour!

When to Visit the Czech Republic

The Czech Republic is a fantastic European travel destination at any time. But there’s a truly magical atmosphere at Christmas time, as the snow falls around the towering spruce and the ornate cathedral spires.

That’s why our Albatross Tour itineraries through the Czech Republic are scheduled over Christmas – it’s a special time of year to visit this magical place.

Though if Christmas-travelling isn’t your style, then you might prefer Prague in the high season of April to June.

Czech Culture

Helpful Hints

Here are some important details that you should know before you go:

  • Language – More than 95% of people in the Czech Republic speak Czech. Healthy immigration means you’ll also hear Slovak, Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, or even Vietnamese. Statistics vary on the number of English-speaking Czechs, but mostly agree it’s less than 50% of the population. Make sure to pack yourself a few key phrases to get you through the more remote locations.
  • Money – The Czech Republic’s official currency is the Czech koruna (Kč). This comes in six note denominations: 100Kč, 200Kč, 500Kč, 1000Kč, 2000Kč and 5000Kč. Koruna also has six coin denominations: 1Kč, 2Kč, 5Kč, 10Kč, 20Kč and 50Kč. Paying by bank card is well received in the Czech Republic, however, so you won’t need to carry too much cash.
  • Time zone and daylight – The Czech Republic runs on Central European Time (CET). The country is one hour ahead of London time and nine hours behind Sydney time. During the summer months of June to September, daylight lasts up to 16.5 hours with the earliest June sunrise at 5am. Short December days can last just eight hours from 8am to 4pm.
  • Electricity – In the Czech Republic, wall sockets emit a supply voltage of 230V and 50Hz. You’ll need one of two kinds of plugs – Type C and E. These both use two round pins of similar designs.
