Switzerland

Switzerland is a picturesque alpine country that fuses tradition with modernity. The black Val d'Hérens cattle still wear their famous cattle bells and the villages are still full of chalet-style farmsteads, but there are also fabulous chic cafés and modern art galleries to be discovered in the cities.

One of the great things about this humble country is that there’s an adventure for all types of travellers. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker looking to tackle the mountainous slopes of the Valais or you’re looking for a quiet wander through a new city, Switzerland will have you spoiled for choice.

When to Visit Switzerland

With its moderate climate, there’s never really a ‘bad’ time to visit Switzerland. The country enjoys reasonably warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine from May to September. Though the winter months are quite cold, they are the perfect opportunity to embrace the strong snow-sports culture.

The ideal time of year to travel here will depend on what you want to do while abroad. If your dream holiday involves colourful scenery and memorable sightseeing, you’ll get the most out of a summertime visit.

But if snow-based activities are more your scene, a winter holiday in the Swiss Alps is a must. You can even have a magical white Christmas and an enchanting New Year while travelling.

Things to Know Before You Go

Here are some important details that you should know before you go:

  • Money – As Switzerland isn’t part of the European Union (EU), so it’s important to have some Swiss francs (SFr) on hand. Though some establishments may accept euros (€), this won’t always be the case. Swiss francs come in banknote values of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 1,000. The alternative is to invest in a travel card that has Swiss francs on it. But should you go down this route, paying by card for small purchases or at a market might be frowned upon, as Switzerland is a cash-centric country.
  • Time zone and daylight – Switzerland is in Central European Time (GMT +1) or Central European Summer Time (GMT +2) during summer. This puts Switzerland 10 hours behind Melbourne, nine hours ahead of Los Angeles and one hour in front of London. When it comes to daylight, days can last up to 16 hours long from the summer solstice in June. Though in December, when the winter solstice occurs, the daylight is flipped around and nights can last up to 16 hours instead.
  • Electricity – Switzerland uses a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz. You can use a Type F plug while travelling.
